چکیده

A system of two meshing gears exhibits a stiffness that varies with the number of teeth in instantaneous contact and the location of the corresponding contact points. A classical Newtonian statement of the equations of motion leads to a solution that contradicts the fundamental principle of mechanics that the change in total energy in the system is equal to the work done by the external forces, unless the deformation of the teeth is taken into account in defining the direction of the instantaneous tooth interaction force. This paradox is avoided by using a Lagrange’s equations to derive the equations of motion, thus ensuring conservation of energy. This introduces nonlinear terms that are absent in the classical equations of motion. In particular, the step change in stiffness associated with the introduction of an additional tooth to contact implies a step change in strain energy and hence a corresponding step change in kinetic energy and rotational speed. The effect of these additional terms is examined by dynamic simulation, using a system of two involute spur gears as an example. It is shown that the two systems of equations give similar predictions at high rotational speeds, but they differ considerably at lower speeds. The results have implications for gear design, particularly for low speed gear sets. fDOI: 10.1115/1.1891815g

Two Model Compounds to Investigate the Gear Effect: 2,3-Dialkyl-Bicyclo[2.2.1]-Heptane and 2,3-Dialkyl-Bicyclo[2.2.2]-Octane

Compounds I, II and III, were used as models resembling gear systems (bods connecting CR3 groups to the skeletal molecule are parallel) in surveying the potential energy surface for their internal rotation. The magnitude of the barriers calculated for averaging the NMR signals, placed these compounds in the range of measurement accessible by dynamic NMR spectroscopy (which is cur...

An Energy Conserving Modification of Numerical Methods for the Integration of Equations of Motion

In the integration of the equations of motion of a system of particles, conventional numerical methods generate an error in the total energy of the same order as the truncation error. A simple modification of these methods is described, which results in exact conservation of the energy.

Modeling a Robot with Flexible Joints and Decoupling its Equations of Motion

Recently a method has been developed to decouple the equations of motion for multi-rigid body systems. In this paper, the method is first studied, then the equations of motion for a planar two degree-of-freedom robot with flexible joints are carried out using Lagaranges equations and Kanes equation with congruency transformations. Finally, the results obtained from both methods are throroughly ...

Conserving Energy during Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Water, Proteins, and Proteins in Water

Molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out for a series of systems of increasing complexity including: pure water, a model polypeptide (a-helical decaglycine) in vacuo, a protein (Pancreatic Trypsin Inhibitor, PTI) in vacuo, and a fully solvated protein (PTI in water). The equations of motion were integrated using Andersen’s velocity version of the Verlet algorithm with internal contr...
